Assessment: Children & Youth

Children and Youth (age 7+)

We offer assessment for ADHD, intellectual developmental disorder, and other learning disorders. A psychoeducational assessment can be helpful for children and youth who are struggling with learning, attention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and/or anxiety. This type of assessment helps to uncover your child’s strengths and challenges to better understand how best to support them be the best version of themselves at school, at home, and in the future.

Typically this type of assessment includes an initial interview with parents/caregivers, 1 or 2 in-office cognitive and academic testing sessions with your child (4-5 hours total), gathering information from parents, teachers, and other professionals, and finishing with a final session to explain the results of the assessment, any diagnoses that have been identified, and recommendations for.

Each assessment is tailored to your unique situation and results in a comprehensive report, complete with analysis, diagnoses where appropriate, and recommendations for academic development, mental health/well being, and potential treatment options. Assessment: Adults

There are many reasons why an adult may seek an assessment. For example, maybe you can relate to some of the following:

  • You always wondered why school, or certain subjects, always seemed harder for you than for others.
  • You have been told by teachers or parents that you “have so much potential and just need to apply yourself”, but you could never seem to figure out how to actually do it.
  • You feel scattered, forgetful, and overwhelmed even though you have tried a million things (air tags on everything, multiple reminders, tried and abandoned day planners).
  • You can’t seem to do this ‘adulting’ thing (paying bills, cleaning, making appointments, and on and on).
  • It is hard to sit still, you are always on the go, and you feel restless when you have to stay seated or wait in lines.
  • You have a mind that JUST. WILL. NOT. STOP with all the random thoughts and distractions. You realize mid conversation that you haven’t heard a word the person has said.
  • Or maybe you are impulsive with your spending, say whatever comes to mind without thinking, or have trouble sticking to a plan/job/relationship/etc.
  • Or, maybe you can manage to do most of the above when you try really, really hard, but you are exhausted from all the effort.

A psychoeducational assessment may be able to provide answers to questions you’ve had all your life, or ones you are just starting to realize you have. An assessment can identify your strengths, areas of need, and whether you meet the criteria for ADHD, Specific Learning Disorder, or another disorder. It can also help you to secure the supports and accommodations needed to succeed in post-secondary studies, work, and personal life (including updating a previous diagnosis).

Therapy: Children

Children learn best through play. That is why the work we do with children incorporates play and hands-on activities through which children learn skills to manage emotions, deal with stressors, and develop confidence in who they are.

Prior to working with your child, we will meet with you to discuss concerns and set goals for counselling. We often work with children to build skills that help with:

*Emotional regulation * ADHD* Anxiety/stress * Depression * Behavioural concerns * Self-Esteem

Therapy: Youth

As children move into adolescence, they begin learning more about themselves and who they want to become as adults. This is a transitional period, and many teens face challenges as they navigate high school, their social interactions, and their identity. Teens are emerging adults and we treat them as such, by showing them respect, compassion, and trusting that they want to be the best version of themselves (even if that desire is buried under a tangled mess of emotions).

Our first goal when working with teens is for them to feel truly seen and understood. Once that is established we work to help them discover what is most important to them, what kind of person they want to be, and how their behaviours and decisions might be getting in the way of that. We won’t lecture or talk down to teens, but we will challenge them to become the best version of themselves based on their strengths, passions, and tapping into their authentic selves (which are so easily lost in the social pressures of high school).

We can handle whatever issues your teen throws at us (or if not, we will help you find someone who can!). That said, we have particular interest/focus in the following:

*ADHD *Addiction *Anxiety *Depression *Healthy Relationships *Self-Harm *Suicidal Thoughts *Body Image *Sexuality and Gender Identity *Career Exploration/Counselling

Therapy: Adults

If you are reading this, it is likely that you have come to a challenging time in your life and have decided maybe it is time to seek a new perspective. Perhaps you are looking for clarity about what you want from life and what is standing in your way. Maybe you need an opportunity to build skills to handle the stress, worry, or emotions that cloud your vision. Or maybe you just need a safe and comfortable space to talk about the overwhelming thoughts and feelings with someone who gets it. Someone who really sees you – the ‘you’ that often gets hidden or feels like “too much”.

We are here for it. We want to help you through this and into a future where you no longer need us (the goal of any good therapist should be to work themselves out of a job with each and every client!).

Check our Psychologist bios for more specific information about each of our areas of focus, but some of the issues we love to work with include:

Anxiety and panic * Body image * Depression * Stress * Life & career transitions * Addiction * ADHD * Suicidal ideation * Relationships * Self-harm

  • Types of Therapy Offered
  • Acceptance and Commitment (ACT)
  • Cognitive Behavioural (CBT)

Richie Wade-Cummings, M.Ed.

I am a Registered Psychologist (Provisional, #1226) with over 10 years of experience working in public education; having worked with students and families in both urban and rural settings, as well as students while they are receiving care in hospital. I hold Bachelor  of Music Education (B.Mus.Ed.) and Master of Education (M.Ed.) degrees from the University of Regina and am a member of the Saskatchewan College of Psychologists.

My therapeutic work is based on the humanist approach.

I look beyond your current concern and seek to understand you as a whole person – tell me your story. I understand we exist in a diverse, multicultural world; and that for each of us our unique identity can be a source of both strength and stress. It is through this lens that I engage in our work together.

Child and Teen Counselling: School-Related Concerns: During my time working in the education sector, I have seen the stress that learning-related concerns and school avoidance can cause for students and their families. Working together, we will use the strengths and resilience within yourself and your child to develop skills, tools, and strategies to support school engagement. I tailor specific interventions to each child’s unique situation; including (but not limited to) social skills training, emotional literacy and regulation, executive functioning, and managing school-related anxiety.

Adult Counselling: Using a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), I provide therapy and counselling to adult clients who are experiencing times of transition. These transitions may include: completing high school and beginning the “next phase;”  parenthood; returning to school; navigating family relationships; committed partnerships; effective communication; work/life/leisure balance; exploring personal and professional identities; finding and fostering meaningful connections.

Assessment and Diagnosis: I also complete psychoeducational assessments *(ADHD, Learning Disorders)* for clients age 7 and older to determine if a diagnosis is appropriate,  gain a deeper understanding of your unique learning strengths and needs, and make recommendations for accommodations to support success at school and/or work.

*As a Registered Psychologist (Provisional), I am supervised by Amy Stensrud, M.Ed., Registered Psychologist.

Common Questions.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

The first appointment is your opportunity for us to get to know each other, talk about the reasons you are seeking services, and to discuss what you hope to get out of our time together. This includes a review of your/your child’s history through a clinical interview, after which we will discuss a treatment or assessment plan. We will talk about confidentiality, consent for services, and what to expect going forward. It is important for you to complete the online intake and consent form before your appointment so that we can free up
time to focus on your specific concerns.

What are your fees?

The rate for Psychology Services is $200 per hour, which is based on 50 minutes of appointment time and 10 minutes of record-keeping time.

Many clients have extended health benefits through employee plans that cover part or all of the cost of services. Please confirm your coverage details with your insurance plan, including whether they require a physician’s referral for service.

How do I pay for services? Do you direct bill to my insurance?

I accept payment by credit card, e-transfer, or cheque.
We are happy to direct bill to your insurance where possible. We currently direct bill to Canada Life, Desjardins,
ClaimSecure, IAFinancial Group, Green Shield Canada, Chamber of Commerce, Blue Cross, WCB, NIHB, Victim
Services, and Jordan’s Principle. Some workplaces who cover costs directly also allow for direct billing. If your plan is not
listed and you think we may be able to direct bill, please email us and we will see if we can make it happen!

Do I bring my child to the first appointment?

It is very helpful when we can meet without your child for the first appointment. You have valuable information about their
history and current functioning that may be most appropriate to discuss without them present. We can then come up with
a plan for how best help the child you are seeking service for before we bring them in. For these reasons, we
recommend that you do not bring your child/youth to the initial appointment, particularly when the child is 12 or under.
However, there may be times where it makes sense to bring your child to part or all of the first appointment (eg/ teens) .
If you believe this is the case for you, it will be important for us to discuss this in advance of the appointment.

What if parents of a child are divorced/separated or the child is not in the care of either parent?

All parents/legal guardians with legal authority to consent to psychological services must provide written consent before
the child/youth can come for services. However, sometimes getting consent of one or both parents/guardians is
difficult/impossible – for example, if one parent cannot be found or reached. If this is the case for the child you are
seeking service for, please contact us by email or phone and we will do our best to help you access service for the child
within ethical boundaries.

How much does an assessment cost?

The short answer is, it depends, but we will always make sure we have given you a firm price before proceeding
past the initial intake appointment.

The long answer is . . .

Each assessment is tailored to the individual based on the concerns you have and the questions you want answered.
Assessment is a considerable investment of your time and resources, and we want to make sure that it is the best option
for you or your child before we proceed. Regardless of what assessment type you initially request, we will start with an
intake appointment (included in cost estimates below) to discuss your situation and decide the most helpful way to
proceed. We will provide you with a firm quote before we continue so that there are no surprise costs. You are
never obligated to continue with assessment after this first appointment.
In general, an assessment typically falls
into one of 2 categories:

  1. Psychoeducational Assessment: most often completed with children/youth/adult students to assess for specific
learning disorders, ADHD, intellectual developmental disorder, and mental health difficulties. The cost is typically
    $2400.
  2. Adult ADHD Assessment: most often appropriate when an adult is no longer attending school and there is no
evidence of specific learning disorders. The cost is typically $2000, although this can vary depending on the
complexity of your concerns. A firm quote will be provided at your initial intake appointment.

How do I know if my child needs an assessment?

An assessment may be helpful if the child you are concerned about is:

– having difficulty learning in one or more subjects despite getting extra help and supports

– stressed/overwhelmed by school and it causes excessive anxiety, frustration, or conflict

– taking far longer to complete homework than would be expected

– tends to have trouble making/keeping friends

– forgetful, has difficulty paying attention, or has a lot trouble keeping track of belongings

– is restless, impulsive, or reckless

– is not meeting developmental milestones/seems young for their age

A good place to start when there is trouble related to school is the child’s classroom teacher to find out if they are seeing

what you are seeing. Often the teacher will be able to provide insights into your child that may be helpful in your decision
to pursue assessment. In some cases, the school may be able to provide assessment services, although wait times can
often lead parents to pursue private assessment.

What does it mean when a Registered Psychologist is “Provisional”?

You may have noticed that Richie is listed as a Registered Psychologist (Provisional) and wondered what that is about. A
Registered Psychologist (Provisional) has already completed their graduate level university training and has moved on to
their initial licensing period, during which their work is supervised* by a fully licensed Registered Psychologist. The
Provisional period lasts between 1 and 3 years, includes a minimum of 1500 supervised hours, licensing exams, and
rigorous standards, after which they are able to become fully licensed Registered Psychologists.
One of the benefits of choosing a Registered Psychologist in their Provisional period is that you are getting the freshly
developed skills and knowledge of a new Psychologist along with the experience and expertise of their Supervisor –
effectively getting the opinion and skill of two professionals in one!
*(Supervision includes having their notes/files reviewed periodically by their Supervisor, consulting with their Supervisor on treatment
plans/methods/options, and occasionally having their Supervisor observe their sessions first hand. Clients are never obligated to give permission for
their sessions to be observed. Session observation occurs infrequently, and most clients do not have their sessions observed.)
